A slow website is like a shop with a jammed door: most people turn around before they are even inside. Google's Core Web Vitals measure exactly this experience — and they affect both your rankings and your conversions. Here we explain the three metrics simply and show how to improve them.
LCP, INP and CLS explained simply Core Web Vitals consist of three metrics. LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) measures how fast the largest visible content — usually an image or the headline — loads; under 2.5 seconds is good. INP (Interaction to Next Paint) measures how quickly the page responds to clicks and input. CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) measures whether elements jump around while loading.
Together these three values describe how fast, responsive and stable your page feels — from the perspective of real users.
Why speed affects conversions and rankings Every extra second of load time costs visitors and therefore enquiries. People are impatient: if a page loads too slowly, they bounce before they even see your offer. Fast pages, by contrast, feel professional and keep visitors longer.
Google also uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking signal. A fast, stable page has better chances of front positions with otherwise equal content — and wins twice: with people and with the search engine.
Common causes of slowness The typical brakes: oversized, unoptimised images, too many and too heavy fonts, bloated scripts and plugins, and cheap, slow hosting. Advertising and tracking code can noticeably slow a page too. Often many small problems add up to one sluggish overall effect.
The tricky part: on a fast office PC you barely notice it. On an average smartphone on a mobile network it becomes a real hurdle.
Images, fonts and mobile-first The biggest lever is usually the images. Modern formats, appropriate sizes and lazy loading outside the visible area often bring the biggest jump. For fonts the rule is: few, well-embedded fonts instead of many external ones. And because most visitors come on mobile, we build mobile-first by default — fast and usable on the phone first.
Reserving space for images and ads also prevents the annoying layout jump and noticeably improves the CLS value.
